Pen Friend Project
Pen friends are people who write to each other, particularly via postal mail. A pen friend relationship is used to practice reading and writing in a foreign language, to learn more about other countries and life-styles, and to make friendships. As with any friendships in life, some people remain penpals for only a short time, while others continue to exchange letters and presents for life.
Which are the BENEFITS?
1. Reading and writing skills improve as students practice their writing skills and organize their thoughts onto paper. They are writing for a real purpose and a real audience.
2. Having a pen pal develops compassion and understanding of other cultures and values. Writing to students who are different than themselves help them to learn more about the world around them.
3. Having a pen pal promotes many life skills, including development of social skills. A letter filled with all "all about me" and no questions does not make for a good pen pal relationship! Just as a letter that sounds like "20 Questions" does not foster relationship building either.
4. Letter writing promotes patience; delayed gratification! I know I'm guilty of wanting instant text message replies or quick email responses. Students: "Did our pen pals write back yet?" Teacher (me): "Ummm. . . we just sent their letters yesterday. They haven't even received ours yet!" Students experience the joy of anticipation and then the satisfying reward of getting something after a wait. This makes receiving our pen pal letters even more special!
5. Writing to a pen pal develops a child's curiosity. Wanting to know more about the world, events, and people is an important factor in ALL learning; the more we encourage our child’s curiosity, the better learners they will become.
Let's get started! They were so interested listening to Cindy's video.

How music affects children and their learning?
Did you know that music has been studied, and shown to have a significant impact on children and their learning? Specifically, it can affect a child’s brain development. So, while music may seem an unnecessary art form, or a skill that’s just ‘nice to have’ for some kids, it may be more than that. It may affect a child’s ability to comprehend educational subjects and communicative environments later in life.
- Playing a musical instrument changes kids’ neurology and speeds up brain development: There are physical changes noticed in the brains of groups who had musical training and exposure.
- Music can make kids smarter: aside from creativity, it can affect their IQ, and even their motor skills. Things like being able to think complex thoughts, or remember things are improved by musical ability. And, it makes sense that learning music can help with learning math; music has many mathematical applications, and can make a math lesson a ‘real life’ need, instead of ‘useless’ information.
- Musical experiences with toddlers improve social skills and emotions: It can do this by helping kids expand their communication ability, pay attention longer, and control their emotions.
- Music has benefits at different ages of kids’ development: We see that music can be beneficial to children and their learning in different ways as they age. While it may not all be related to cognitive development, music can help kids learn subjects or express themselves. For example, memorization can be encouraged by singing rhymes or repetitive songs with children. In the teen years, music preferences help kids form bonds with peers, often putting them in ‘groups’ of people who have similar tastes.

Verbs
EXPLORERS
These are the verbs we worked in class. It is an extention of what they have in the book. Some students asked to have it in the blog too. Have fun!
